That’s So 70s

Some major 70s fashion trends are coming back in style, and we are here for it. From the release of Daisy Jones & the Six to Taylor Swift’s album Midnights, it’s no surprise that people are gravitating towards 70s silhouette.

The 1970s were a time of loud patterns, mini skirts, flare jeans, and platform boots. Some 70s icons that embodied this retro style include Audrey Hepburn, Farrah Fawcett, and Brigitte Bardot - and they all changed the fashion world for the better.

What goes around comes around and the 70s have definitely made their way back around. Life imitates art and in this case the art happens to be produced by pop music icon Taylor Swift. Swift describes her newest album Midnights as “a sultry sleepless 70s fever dream” and her album art and music video fashion choices echo that description. With her Eras Tour sweeping the nation, this is the summer of Taylor Swift, so hope on the 70s bandwagon and jump into the lavender haze.

Read on to check out some of our favorite 70’s revival items and where to get them for Summer 2023.

Knit & Crocheted Shirts

Madewell’s Crinkle Polo Crop Tee for $58

Fun knit shirts are a casual and comfortable way to lean into a retro look. Every store has a signature collared tee so it shouldn’t be hard to find one that fits your requirements.

We love the collar and the ruffle on this little crop top from Madewell. We recommend sizing down, as Madewell usually runs large. Go for the Afterglow Red or Light Roast for the earth tones that defined the 70s.

Pair the collared shirt with your favorite high-waisted denim jeans or skirt to secure that classic 70s look.

Marine Layer’s Fay Sweater Top for $98

Anything crocheted in this color scheme is a classic ’70s moment. Pair with your favorite flare jeans or corduroys and platform heels for an elevated yet casual look.

Denim

Denim is back and in a big way. Denim dresses and skirts are covering our Pinterest boards, so read on for our favorite pieces and looks.

We would be remiss to chat about the 70’s and not direct you toward a pair of iconic flare jeans. Free people has been selling flared jeans every year since their inception. Flare jeans are core to their brand. So if you’re looking for a good pair, they’re the store for you.

If you don’t want to wear flare jeans in the summer heat but want to make a denim 70’s statement, opt for the on-trend denim maxi skirt.

This is our favorite trend of 2023. Pair with a bright colored kitten heel or mules to polish off the perfect summer fit.

Platform Shoes

A platform shoe will make just about any outfit lean into a 1970s vibe.

Mary Janes were a staple of the 60’s 70’s and 80’s and they’re the summation of everything we are obsessed with in 2023. Comfortable & classy - you can’t go wrong.

Free People’s Zoe Platform

These platform sandals are perfect for a summer night out. Pair with a bright patterned mini skirt, or our denim pieces listed above, to achieve the full 70s look.
